What are adaptogens and how can they help the female cycle?
What are adaptogens?
Adaptogens are a class of natural substances, primarily herbs and mushrooms, that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and others. They are known for their ability to help the body adapt to various stressors, hence the name "adaptogens."
Now, let's explore how adaptogens can enhance your energy and mood throughout the cycle. Although they are not magic pills, adaptogens can work wonders when you are already on a path to a healthy lifestyle. These natural substances assist the body in adapting to stressful situations, functioning as hormone balancers.
Here are a few of my favorite adaptogens for supporting your cycle:
1. Maca: Maca is a remarkable adaptogen that aids in supporting the female cycle. It may help increase libido, promote ovulation, regulate the menstrual cycle, and offer particular benefits when transitioning off hormonal contraceptives. This is extra good to take in the weeks leading up to your period, where it can help minimize symptoms.
2. Dandelion Root: You may be familiar with dandelion root from its unwanted presence in the garden. However, this plant has numerous benefits for your body. Dandelion root aids in liver function, assists in the elimination of hormones and can potentially alleviate PMS symptoms. I recommend incorporating it into your daily routine to support liver health.
3. Cacao: Not only is cacao delicious, but it also contains high levels of magnesium, making it an ideal companion during your period. It can alleviate headaches, cramps, and mood swings that are commonly experienced during the luteal phase (PMS). Prioritize consuming cacao in the week leading up to and during your period for a more manageable experience. After all, who doesn't love a little chocolate during this time? Indulge in that chocolate sister.
4. Ashwagandha: This might be one of the most famous adaptogens out there and is known for its stress-reducing properties. It can help balance cortisol levels, which in turn may support hormonal balance. Ashwagandha may also aid in reducing anxiety and improving mood, both of which can have positive effects on hormonal health.
5. Rhodiola Rosea: Rhodiola Rosea is an adaptogen that can help combat stress and fatigue. It may also have positive effects on hormonal balance by reducing cortisol levels and supporting the adrenal glands. Additionally, Rhodiola Rosea has been associated with improved mood and cognitive function. The difference between ashwagandha and rhodiola is that rhodiola works as a stimulant so the effects can be felt immediately whereas ashwagandha needs a couple of weeks before you start to feel the difference.
6. Vitex: Also known as Chaste Tree or Chasteberry, Vitex is another adaptogen that supports a regular menstrual cycle, similar to Maca. It can be beneficial for managing PMS symptoms and promoting ovulation. Additionally, Vitex is believed to aid in milk production during breastfeeding, but it should only be used short-term. Consider using it when transitioning off hormonal contraceptives or if you experience irregular cycles, as it provides additional support.
7. Shatavari: Shatavari is an Ayurvedic herb commonly used to support female reproductive health. It is known for its hormone-balancing properties and may help regulate menstrual cycles, alleviate menopausal symptoms, and improve fertility. Shatavari is also believed to nourish and strengthen the female reproductive system.
It's important to note that while adaptogens can be beneficial for many individuals, individual responses may vary. It's always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or herbalist before incorporating adaptogens into your routine, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications.
About Madeleine
I became interested in female health (or holistic female health) when I was tossed around in the health system while studying my fashion business degree in London at Istituto Marangoni. I was getting no solution and was told “you can take the pill to get regular periods but unfortunately there isn't anything else to do about PCOS”. I’ve been angry, happy, sad, excited and everything in between about having a female body. But once you live in sync and understand the superpowers we have, I wouldn’t change it for a million bucks.
Adaptogens came into my life before my interest in female hormones as I was very interested in biohacking - and it wasn’t until later that I understood that they can be used to biohack your way to balanced hormones. So naturally I wanted to combine these interests and start a business.
Today I own two brands within this space, svaan (superfood for female balance) and The Period Club, a leisurewear brand that gives back to period hygiene. It’s my life's mission to help women understand their bodies and to live more in sync.
